George Town is a city of Penang State in Malaysia. The city is located in the northeast of Penang Island and has about 220,000 inhabitants, or about 400,000 including suburbs. George Town was founded in 1786 by Captain Francis Light, a merchant of the British East India Company, as the company's base in the Malaysian states. The fort became the benchmark of growing trade and the population of the island reached 12,000 inhabitants in 1804.
